Suffering From Sleep apnea ? (If So, You’re In The Right Place…)

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder and most often it remains undiagnosed or undetected because it occurs in the sleep. It causes the person to awaken during sleep. This can happen several times during the night, depriving the person of proper sleep. The main cause behind waking up is shallow breathing or pauses in breathing.

Although normal breathing may start again, it can leave the person tired and sleepy during the day. This article deals with some basics about the problem and the possible solutions for it.

The problem

Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder, which is characterised by repeated shallow breathing or pauses in breathing. You might end feeling tired even after having a full night’s sleep.

Sleep apnea is of two main types, obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. Some people can have a combination of both the types, which is referred to as complex sleep apnea.

The most common form of sleep apnea is the obstructive type in which throat muscles relax thereby obstructing the breathing passage. In central sleep apnea, the brain does not send proper signals to the muscles that control breathing.

Some common symptoms

Usually, the symptoms for the two types overlap, making it difficult to recognise the exact type of sleep apnea. However, some symptoms are common and usually are an indication that you consult your doctor immediately.

The most common of all symptoms is also a very logical one. Sleep apnea causes disruptions in sleep. Therefore, you will experience excessive sleepiness or hypersomnia during the day. You might be caught sleeping during eating, even while watching action movies or even while having a conversation. While, it may be amusing to others, it will leave you tired and irritable. You might even end up with a morning headache.

Snoring loudly is usually characteristic of obstructive sleep apnea. People usually consider snoring to be normal and do not think it to be anything beyond it. However, if you snore particularly heavily and your snoring is punctuated by periods of silence, then it is time to see your doctor.

You can awaken during the night with a dry mouth or sore throat or by short breath.

You might even experience insomnia or find it difficult to stay asleep because of shallow breathing.

The solution

Sleep apnea can be potentially dangerous and so should be treated as soon as you find that you have the problem.  I’m going to list 3 possible solutions. I’ll list these in reverse order, from the ones that require a specialist or device, to the one where you can implement yourself.

3. If your breathing is obstructed because of any excess tissue in your nose or throat, which blocks the breathing passage, then surgery is the option to treat your condition.  However, before going to a surgeon, you should consider…

2. Devices. Some devices like Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), adjustable airway pressure devices or oral appliance help to unblock your air passage and make your breathing more normal and even. This will allow you to sleep well.

But even better than having to rely on devices is to do the things you have the most control over…

1. Low to mild cases of sleep apnea will require no more than simple lifestyle changes like losing weight or quitting smoking. However, in more severe cases, you can try therapeutic treatments, drugs, and even surgery.

Losing weight will cause any constriction of the throat to be relieved. Alcohol and medications like tranquilisers and sleeping pills relax the throat muscles, so you should avoid them. Sleeping on your side instead of your back will also cause you to keep your airway clear and sleep properly.
